The Health and Safety Executive state that more than 1,000 workers per month suffer serious injury while working in food related industries. The main causes of accidents and injuries are:

  • Slipping on spillages on wet floors. These accidents comprise almost 35% of the whole.
  • Trips caused by obstructions and uneven surfaces
  • Manual handling. 30% of reported injuries fall into this category and can be caused by stacking boxes, pushing wheeled vehicles, lifting containers and heavy items such as meat carcasses.
  • Falls from heights. These are the third highest cause of fatalities – and remember, heights could also be cellars, a hazard to the pub trade.
  • Injuries from food processing equipment, a further major cause of fatalities.
  • Workplace transport injuries – for example, being hit or crushed by a vehicle or being struck by something falling from a vehicle.
  • Fire and explosions – simple kitchen fires can cause severe burn accidents, but chip fat fires are among the most dangerous. Explosions can be caused by gas canisters and from substances causing flammable vapours.

Remember, training staff in Health and Safety is not an option, it is a legal requirement. This Health and Safety course has a learning content of 6 hours, but can be completed in less time. The end test consists of 20 multi choice questions, of which 18 must be answered correctly.
